Monday, July 7: Membership Breakfast, Boise Potpourri
We started today with a hearty Membership Breakfast at the Elks Lodge. As per tradition, Navion Society leaders such as Gary Rankin and Jim Waldron (well, I don't remember Jim wearing a wig last time!) go over the upcoming events for the week. After breakfast, we boarded a charter bus for an entire day seeing the sites of Boise, Idaho. We started our site seeing extravaganza by boarding a little tour train which took us all around the older areas of down-town Boise, while the tour guide described the famous sites and lovely scenes. The tour bus dropped us off for an hour in an area with lots of restaurants and let us forage for food ourselves. After lunch, we boarded the bus again for a trip to the Idaho State Penitentiary. We spend several hours touring the old prison and looking in cells (which are no longer occupied!). Right next to the old penitentiary is the botanical garden which we also toured. After a few hours of mostly outdoor walking in the hot Boise afternoon sun, I became very popular by scouting out the location of a soft drink vending machine. From there, we drove to an Irish Pub style restaurant for our third big meal of the day (I should be ready to eat again sometime in August!). I got some good pictures of various tables of Navioneers during dinner, I'm sure you'll recognize many of these characters ( Navioneers, more Navioneers, still more, and more,, and more, and more, and more, and more, and more). The grand finale of the evening was gathering at a park in Boise and enjoying a Basque musical show by a local group comprised largely of children. At the end of the show, the children each picked a partner from the audience for the last dance. Since I was chosen by a charming 8 year old boy, I didn't get any pictures of our stunning performance, but I did get to hold hands with Dick McSpadden for a few minutes. :-) P.S. Today is Dick's birthday! |
