American Navion Society Convention 2000 in Santa Maria, CA

Sunday, August 13: Departing Seattle (BFI) for Santa Maria

We departed Boeing Field at approximately 9:45 AM. I had to file IFR to get through an unusually stubborn marine layer that had plagued our area for the past two weeks which sometimes didn't burn off until well into the afternoon. Passing through about 2000 feet, we were on top of a solid layer until well into Oregon.

Our first planned stop was Eugene but it was clearing off in southern Oregon so we pushed on to Medford (clear skies) for our first fuel stop and a quick lunch at the resteraunt in the terminal.

The next leg was Ron's turn to fly. Flying south from Medford, we knew we we nearing California when we saw the familiar view of Mount Shasta ahead. There was quite a bit less snow on the mountain than when we passed through this way last March. Nearing our planned altitude of 11,500 for this slightly eastbound route, I couldn't resist taking a picture to prove that our GO-435 can still climb at 500 feet/minute (at a normal climb speed) at this altitude (a feat our previous Cherokee 140 couldn't quite manage).

Our next planned stop was Santa Maria, but Ron was ready to stretch his legs a little earlier than that. We considered stopping at Stockton but as we approached close enough to pick up the ATIS we got discouraged by the amount of construction and reduced services avialable at the time. So we pushed on a little further and stopped at Salinas. From there it was a short leg (my turn again) to Santa Maria. We expected many people to arrive on Monday so were quite surprised to find that at about 6:00pm on Sunday, the place was already packed with Navions!

Coming soon, more pictures from the ANS 2000 Convention!!
